Legacy Before you mentioned that big building a while back, I was already thinking about follow-through and a chance to keep building on the "huh..I guess we ARE kind of neat if you think about it.." feeling the town activities will create.
When I was going to Lewis and Clark meetings, there was a strong focus on having something to show for the money/effort/time spent. Something that would last and be useful to the community.
It was talked about a lot and I'm not sure the committee actually Got It. It seemed almost like they saw it as a tedious extra hoop they had to jump through to get funding.
The frustration of watching all the tail-chasing and waste was more than I was willing to keep driving so far for and since it was obvious that I wasn't going to get to do anything to help, I opted out. It's probably best if I keep my opinion on how well they met the request of insuring there was something good after the event to myself. I was disappointed.
I do not want us to start building good feelings in the county and not follow through. I happen to believe that doing that is worse than never starting.
SO, what I have in mind is not exactly a museum..it's got people Using it instead of feeling good about knowing it's there.
The part I would choose to focus on is breaking down the sad defeatism of repeatedly hearing "Disadvantaged Area/Youth/etc" My thought on that is sort of along the lines of 'well..let's DO something about it..let's figure a way to Advantage ourselves'
I will come back to this topic later with a semi-clear summary of how I would propose setting this up.

re: Town Activities I plan to find a fiddler that will do a talk/demonstration on the topic of Missouri Fiddling. I will find one that can describe and demonstrate the various MoFiddle styles..and show other styles for comparison.
We still have musicians in the area and we aren't far from the years when homemade music was a BIG thing. I want to boost that and encourage some new growth.
I am going to try to find an instrument/accessory vendor who has several reasonably priced guitars (by this, I mean 'cheap') When I find this vendor, I will do a Very Beginner workshop at every activity (need to find a name for these activities!) which will be available for the folks with newly purchased guitars and whoever else wants to hang out and learn how this 'by ear' thing works.
The Very Beginner Workshop will be my post.
During the day, we will have various craft/hobby demonstrations. First preference on space goes to folks from the Host Town. Within the county folks get the next spaces..outsiders get whatever is left. My goal is for this to be an opportunity for our locals to be the Stars..a chance for everybody to see firsthand that we ARE interesting and have something to offer.
I will have locals from the Town Group doing old time street games. This will be things like Kick the Can, Jacks, Jumprope..etc. The games kids used to play.
equipment request
I think we should have a schedule board that's big enough to be easily visible. A whiteboard would work..but would be a hassle to schlep around.
Would the company we're using for the Local Display pictures have a sheet of something that can be written on and reused (whiteboard marker or grease pen) I'm looking for something flexible enough to roll up and easy to hook to a frame (that will be easy to break down/reassemble)

re: General Questions Do we have an option within this wiki of making a Private thread? I would like to get one going for communication with the musicians I'm working with so they can ask questions and make the whole thing easier for me to keep organized.
If we do have the option, where's the clicky for it?

Town Activities This is my list so far.
I am talking to:
Ragtime
OldTime/Old Country
Highland Pipe/Drum
Bluegrass (early influence)
Missouri Interest
Religious
All of these fit the goal of being connected to our county history and I am pleased with the variety.
These will be a very good addition to the town activities and I think we'll get good turnout for all of them.
I had planned to schedule something like an old-fashioned hymn sing where people who were interested could get together and sing/hear the hymns from their childhood..sixty years or so ago.
It is turning out slightly different from that. We are talking about the possibility of including more truly old music..shape-note/Sacred Harp. I am excited about this thrilling development!
